Acquiring a Chevalet

Complete Sketchup plans for the Chevalet de Marqueterie in Solid Wood:

If you have not already you will need to install (free) Google Sketchup.  You don’t need the “Pro” version, just the free “Sketchup Make” version will be fine.

One of the obstacles to pursuing French marquetry is that in order to get the most out of your new skills you need a chevalet and they are not readily available at your local tool store. While this is an inconvenience, it need not stop you from acquiring one.

Available Kits and Plans:

Patrick Edwards at The American School of French Marquetry sells the plans and hardware kits and David Clark is building a complete (wooden parts) chevalet kit. You can contact David at david.chevalet@gmail.com

A new option as of August 2016 is the plywood version that we have designed at CSFM to be accessible to the less skilled woodworker or perhaps the woodworker who just wants to get on with the marquetry as quickly and easily as possible. The structure can be built from scratch from a single sheet of 3/4” plywood by following the Sketchup Model and Directions posted on this site.

This chevalet is also available in kit form in various levels of completion.

Build From Scratch:

If you wish to build from scratch, I have prepared a fully dimensioned sketchup model (see below) and a series of blogs detailing all the steps including how to make your own hardware. This is the most time consuming option but it is not a difficult build for an average woodworker and you will have the distinct pleasure of making fine marquetry on a beautiful machine that you built with your own hands. This is the most economical way and can be done for around $100 in about 40 hours by an average woodworker.

I have built several and know of several more that have been built from these plans and of course I will be as close as an email to help you with any problems in your build.
