The Canadian School of French Marquetry, located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, is dedicated to the understanding and advancement of the tools, techniques and materials developed and used by the French marqueteurs (ébénistes) of the golden age. Principle among these is the chevalet de marqueterie, a hand powered machine that many believe is to this day the best and most accurate tool with which to cut intricate marquetry.

Developed by the guild of ébénistes in Paris over two hundred years ago, this saw revolutionized the art of marquetry. The guild kept it a well guarded secret and until quite recently it was seldom seen outside of France and indeed outside of Paris.

We offer courses that employ the  same tools and techniques used by these master craftsmen and students will learn to make marquetry just as it was made by the ébénistes in the heyday of French marquetry.

Classes include detailed instruction and hands on creation with the emphasis on the latter. All critical materials are supplied and students will finish classes not only with  new skills but with several examples of their work.

The Canadian School of French Marquetry now offers intensive one on one interactive video classes encompassing all the same instruction previously included in our week long courses.
